EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
Big Sky Fire Department can field up to three adavanced life support ambulances during peak periods to respond to medical emergencies. Please see our Ambulances page for more information about our units.
BSFD paramedics and emergency medical technicians operate within the Gallatin County Prehospital Emergency Medical Services Protocols and work closely with the Emergency Room physicans at Bozeman Deaconess Hospital. Our paramedics have gone through extensive initial training, which consists of approximately 2 years of classroom and practical experience. In order to maintain their National Registry and Montana State certifications, paramedics and EMTs must complete ongoing Continuing Education as well as hold current certifications in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
BSFD paramedics maintain a proficiency in many life saving techniques including intravenous (IV) line insertion, intraosseous line insertion (IVs that can be inserted into the bones of the lower leg), drug administration, CPR, 12 Lead EKG monitoring and interpretation, cardiac defibrillation, patient imobilization and endotracheal intubation (mechanical breathing though a tube inserted into the trachea), among other skills.
Depending on the severity of the incident, BSFD also works with Summit Air Ambulance, which is based out of Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport and can summoned to the scene for rapid transport to the ER at Bozeman Deaconess or another appropriate facility.
